National Homeschool Tennis Open
Tulsa Oklahoma – Fall, 2011
To our fellow homeschool athletic organizations:
     We are putting together a National Championship Tennis Open in the Fall of 2011. This introductory note is to gauge interest from the home school community. If you are interested please ping back to me at Tennis@NOAHjags.org. You may be surprised how many tennis players are in your home school community that would be interested in an event such as this.
    Our "Tennis Open" will use a team format to select Boys and Girls National Champions in age groups of 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U. Each tennis team will require 4 - 6 players and will consist of the following:
  • #1 Line Single Player
  • #2 Line Single Player
(Individual participants are encouraged and will be placed on Team USA teams)
  • #1 Line Doubles Pair
  • #2 Line Doubles Pair
    Points are earned for the team as each, in the above lineup, wins matches. We will begin the Open with pool play (made up of three teams) to seed teams into Gold, Silver and Bronze Championship flights. Upon seeding the flights Championship play will commence will all teams playing matches to determine first through last place finishes. At least four to five matches are expected making the trip to Tulsa worthwhile. The Open would begin on Monday extending through Wednesday or Thursday (depending on the number of teams participating).
Tulsa is beautiful in the fall and we encourage all too seriously consider participation.
    LaFortune Tennis Center in Tulsa will be the host location. LTC is a wonderful tennis club that has recently been expanded. See the attached link for a video of the facilities. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWlQVEEp_lg. Tulsa is a large metro area centrally located in the United States accessible to many locations within a one day drive.
    I would like a response that contains contact email and telephone numbers plus three things;
  1. Yes, we can probably pull a team together, or
  2.  I know of a couple of students that might be interested.
  3.  No, we are not planning to participate.
    Of course, there are many details to work out and your response will help our planning team sort through these. Should there be sufficient interest, we will firm up the particulars and communicate back with you as soon as possible.
    Tulsa is beautiful in the fall and we encourage all too seriously consider participation. This is an opportunity to travel with your tennis players, building memories of team participation in a sport that they can “play for life”! And by the way, for those that worry about getting behind in studies, a brand new library is on the premises (shown in the video) where your students can keep up on their work between matches!!
     Please feel free to forward to other home school groups.
Thanks for your time!

2010 NOAH Fall Tennis Begins September 13th

As the oppressive heat finally breaks, we are pleased to announce that NOAH is providing an opportunity for 7th graders and up to play Fall Tennis.  This is a great opportunity to work on your strokes leading up to 2011 Spring Tennis.  This is a relaxed atmosphere to get some court time with our NOAH coaches (see attached bios) who will be available Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for six weeks.  Fall tennis will wrap up with a USTA skill level evaluation and a practice plan for the winter months.

The schedule is as follows;

1.     Kids new to tennis will practice from 5 to 6 PM – if you are new to NOAH come to this time slot.  The coaches will move your student to the experienced group, if appropriate.

2.      Experienced kids will practice from 6 to 7 PM – this year’s focus will be doubles match play.  We will need some of the experienced kids to assist with the new kids at 5 PM.

NOAH’s home courts are at Benedict Park which is located near Hillcrest Hospital, 12th and Utica.

The cost will be as follows; $20 and no uniforms will be required. Fall Tennis is not mandatory, however the participant will have 18 sessions available, so it is hoped that all can take advantage of this opportunity.

ACTIONPlease PING me back by FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd, if you have an interest in participating this fall tennis event.

Thanks!

2010 NOAH Tennis Try Outs - October 19 - 22

NOAH will conduct tennis team tryouts for Spring 2010 High School and Junior High tennis at Benedict Park (12th and Utica Ave) near Hillcrest Hospital.  Junior High (up through 8t graders) will try out on October 19 - 20, 4 to 6 PM.  High School students will try out on October 21- 22, 4 to 6 PM.  We expect to field both a varsity and junior varsity teams. There will be a $5 charge to cover costs such as tennis balls and etc.  Please plan to arrive 30 minutes early such that we are able to begin at 4 PM.

NOAH offers spring, summer and fall tennis programs with our spring teams being our most competitive.  In the spring we play against local public and private schools in the months of March through mid May. To this end our try outs will use United States Tennis Association, USTA, grading standard of Level 2.5 as our benchmark.  Below is the definition from USTA;

A 2.5 Player is able to judge where the ball is going. Player can sustain a slow pace rally of several shots with someone of the same ability using both forehand and backhand sides and can volley with moderate success.  Player can keep score unassisted, can call own lines, can serve overhand from the baseline and has a basic understanding of the rules.

If your student is at this level of play they are encouraged to come to the try outs.  If you student is below this level you are encouraged to work with you student independently and then participate in NOAH's summer and fall programs to get them prepared to play tennis at this USTA level.  Our summer and fall programs are more developmental and will provide your student with the best opportunity to succeed at tennis.

If you plan to attend, please RSVP to me at ted.cooper@williams.com  by 10/15 so that we will know how many will be attending.   Of course, your student will need a racket and tennis shoes as well as some water.

 If you have questions, please call Ted Cooper at 688-3410 or 250-6533.
